New Clothing Trends Encompass Heavy Duty Workwear

Workwear has been out of style for most of the planet, except for lumberjacks, cable guys, professional Abseilers, or the like, who are required to don plaid shirts, peak caps and heavy duty trousers for safety. The newest clothing trends have encompassed outside work style clothes, and it’s creating a storm.

This time around, people are not simply buying menswork trousers and wearing them, they're adding, taking away, altering and accessorizing their new clothing to encompass the current clothing trends for 2011. Even though we’re looking at less than one month left for 2011, this trend is looking to carry over to 2012.

Men and particularly women are looking to hard-wear working brands that use lots of heavy materials such as canvas and coated denim, to personalize and alter to suit their own style. The actual brands are starting to see this new trend as an opportunity to get their foot in the fashion clothing door, with some brands catering to the fashion conscious while still ensuring their industrial-minded clientele get exactly the clothing they require for their heavy-duty jobs.

There’s always been a steady demand for work shirts and trousers but the lumberjack is making a comeback. The plaid shirts are to be found in many clothing cupboards with winter creeping in. One store owner said that they sometimes get the odd guy looking for Dickies pants specifically for work, but most of them just want them for fashion.

To give an idea of how far these clothing trends are going, an art gallery in Canada’s dress code for one of their recent events was ‘lumberjack formal.’ Regardless of job or style, clothing trends for winter is clearly workwear that’s definitely going to last.

UK Businesses mark Workers' Memorial Day

Every year, April 28th marks Workers’ Memorial Day – when businesses around the globe commemorate those who have died or been injured in the course of their daily occupations. Workers’ Memorial Day is a vitally important event because it highlights the need for maintaining high standards of health and safety practices in all hazardous industries. Trade unions, occupational safety campaigners and bereaved or financially affected families all come together to remember those who have lost their lives, and to focus on better ways of protecting workers on a daily basis. Workers’ Memorial Day 2011 was also particularly significant as it marked the first anniversary of official recognition of the event in the UK.

Employees Paid to Don Safety Clothing

In a recent court ruling in the US, global food manufacturers, Kraft Foods, were ordered to pay employees for their time changing in and out of safety clothing. This is despite the company and employees agreeing that there would be no pay for the time taken to change into the reflective safety clothing. Unfortunately for the company, this is going to cost them several million dollars in back pay.
